Several popular South African influencers, including Cyan Boujee and Seemah, have lost access to their TikTok accounts after promoting a controversial work-study program in Russia that many fear may be linked to human trafficking and exploitation.
The backlash started after the South African government confirmed it was investigating these influencers for advertising the so-called “Start Program” in Russia. Concerned social media users quickly mobilized, reporting their TikTok accounts under the “human exploitation” category.
On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, an X (formerly Twitter) user @Paballo_maseko_ revealed the outcome of the mass reporting campaign:
“After we reported the influencers’ accounts under ‘human exploitation’ for promoting the Start Program in Russia, TikTok banned their accounts 🤭.”
As a result, Seemah lost her account with 2.8 million followers, while Cyan Boujee’s account with 1.8 million followers was also removed. Another influencer, Sibongile Kajane, faced the same fate. Users have since vowed to keep reporting until all influencers linked to the program are banned.
Although both Cyan Boujee and Seemah have issued public apologies for promoting the program, many South Africans remain skeptical. Fears linger that the Start Program may be a cover for human trafficking or youth exploitation, fueling calls for stricter accountability.
The bans sparked a heated debate online. Some applauded the swift action, while others argued the influencers should be given a chance to redeem themselves.
One user, @iamchris_TK, praised the campaign:
“Somebody’s life is saved out there because of you. You’ve done a good job.”
Another, @moroaswi, admitted to being torn:
“I reported them and I had to do so. But I love them so much… I was left with no choice. We have sisters.”
However, not everyone agreed. @DSaprais58500 defended the influencers:
“Y’all are going for their bag. With this high unemployment, I think they learned their lesson. Forgive them.”
As of now, it remains unclear whether the bans are permanent or temporary, as none of the affected influencers have released official statements. Many expect them to appeal to TikTok for account reinstatement in the coming days.
This story is still developing.
