Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has admitted he was close to being sacked last season, but revealed that his strong relationship with the club’s hierarchy kept him in the job.
Speaking after City’s emphatic 4-0 Premier League opening win against Wolves, Guardiola reflected on what he described as a “bad season” in 2024/25.
City finished third in the league, lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace, crashed out of the EFL Cup in the fourth round, and were eliminated from the Champions League at the first knockout stage by Real Madrid.
In an interview with TNT Sports, Guardiola said:
“I’m really pleased to sit here after a bad season.
If I didn’t have my chairman and sporting director like I have, I would have been sacked, definitely. Because the results were really, really poor.”
Despite last season’s disappointment, City have started the new campaign strongly, and Guardiola will be hoping to deliver silverware to repay the faith shown in him by the club’s leadership.
