The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called on Nigerians to acquire combat skills as part of basic survival training.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, the defence chief compared combat readiness to other essential life skills like driving and swimming.
When asked if he would advise Nigerians to take up combat skills for self-defence, General Musa replied: “That one should be taken as learning driving, learning how to swim. Whether we have war or not, it is a survival instinct.
“In Europe, swimming is compulsory; [so is] Learning and teaching about security because you have to learn what security is.”
He suggested that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) should train Nigerian graduates in unarmed combat, stressing that such skills would help them handle real-life threats posed by “dark-hearted men.”
General Musa also emphasized that safeguarding the nation is a collective responsibility, urging citizens to remain situationally aware and vigilant in identifying suspicious individuals in their surroundings.
