Manchester United have emerged as champions of the 2025 Premier League Summer Series, despite being held to a 2-2 draw by Everton in a tense fixture at Atlanta.
While the result secured them the crown, it once again highlighted lingering defensive issues under manager Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United got off to a flying start, with Bruno Fernandes converting from the penalty spot after a controversial decision went in their favour. Mason Mount later restored United’s lead with a superb curling effort after Everton had drawn level.
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing.
Everton capitalized on Manchester United’s defensive errors, with Iliman Ndiaye pouncing on a poor decision by Manuel Ugarte to level the score the first time. The equalizer came again in bizarre fashion — Amad Diallo’s clearance struck Ayden Heaven and bounced into the back of the net for a freak own goal.
Despite bright moments in attack, particularly from new signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, the midfield imbalance and shaky backline left Amorim frustrated on the sidelines. Cunha came close twice, showcasing his attacking instincts, but United’s transitions were frequently undermined by a lack of cohesion in defense.
The draw may have been enough to seal silverware, but it also served as a timely wake-up call for United ahead of the new Premier League season.
