Mariah Carey Calls Grammys ‘Overrated’ Despite 34 Career Nominations

Mariah Carey has once again shared her unfiltered thoughts about the Grammys, describing the awards as “overrated” despite her decades-long career filled with nominations and acclaim.

The 56-year-old singer, who has won only five Grammys out of a staggering 34 nominations, made the comment during an appearance on Pitchfork’s Over/Under YouTube series. When asked about the prestigious award show, she bluntly replied: “Ha, I think the Grammys are overrated.” Carey went on to clarify that both the ceremony and the awards themselves fell into that category — though she softened her stance by adding, “But we love everybody.”

This isn’t the first time the Always Be My Baby hitmaker has addressed her complicated relationship with the Grammys. On the Las Culturistas podcast last October, Carey agreed with hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers that she doesn’t “have enough” Grammy wins, jokingly adding: “They scaaaaammed me. They toy with me.”

Carey’s first two Grammys came in 1991 for Best New Artist and Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for Vision Of Love. Since then, she has received numerous accolades, including 10 American Music Awards and 20 Billboard Music Awards.

In February 2024, she accepted the Recording Academy’s Global Impact Award at the Black Music Collective event, where she once again playfully shaded the Grammys, asking the audience: “Is this a real Grammy? I haven’t seen one in soooooo long. It’s weird. I don’t know. We’ll figure out what this is later.”

Despite her sparse Grammy collection, Mariah Carey’s legacy as one of music’s most influential voices remains unquestioned.
