Missy Elliott Settles Lawsuit with Producer Claiming Co-Writing Credits

Missy Elliott has reached a settlement with producer Terry Williams, who alleged that he co-wrote several of her songs from the 1990s. The agreement brings an end to the long-running legal battle just days before it was set to go to trial.

Williams filed the lawsuit in 2018, claiming he collaborated with Missy Elliott on multiple tracks in the early stages of her career but was denied credit. His claims centered on SISTA, Elliott’s R&B group before her solo breakthrough, and specifically four songs from their 1994 album 4 All the Sistas Around da World.

The producer, who once ran a Philadelphia recording studio, sought to recover royalties he said were owed since the album’s release. Missy Elliott, however, has consistently denied the claims, insisting that Williams “did not write a single lyric or in any manner contribute to any of the songs.”

Elliott’s attorney told Billboard, “No money was paid in connection with any of Terry Williams’ claims, the last remnants of which were dismissed.”
