A Nigerian woman who relocated to the United Kingdom on a study visa has shared her emotional struggle, revealing that life abroad has not lived up to expectations, and she is now contemplating a return to Nigeria.
In a now-viral video shared via TikTok by user @growithkashrox, the woman recounted how she left a ₦500,000 monthly job, her own apartment, and a debt-free lifestyle in Nigeria, believing she was heading for a better future abroad.
“I Was Comfortable in Nigeria”
“I left my good-paying job in Nigeria to migrate to the UK on a study visa. I was earning ₦500k monthly. I had my own place, no stress, no debt,” she said. “I wasn’t even rich, but I was comfortable. I could afford little luxury and take care of my family.”
The woman added that she was influenced by glamorous stories on social media of people who appeared to quickly find success abroad.
“I came here thinking things would fall into place quickly, the way people post on Instagram like they’ve gotten new jobs in weeks, living soft lives… It’s what I thought.”
Refusing Care Jobs: “I’m Not Built for That”
Since arriving in the UK, the only job referrals she has received have been for care and support roles, which she firmly declined.
“Every single link is about personal care. And honestly, I can’t do it. It’s not pride—I just know I’ll break down mentally and emotionally. I didn’t come here to lose myself.”
She revealed that she’s applied for over 100 non-care jobs—including admin, customer service, and retail—but has received little to no positive feedback due to her lack of UK experience.
“I’m really drained. My savings are almost gone. I cry silently almost every night.”
Considering a Return to Nigeria
With emotional and financial pressure mounting, the woman admitted she is now seriously considering returning to Nigeria:
“I know people will talk about it… but at this point, I’m scared and don’t know if it’s the right decision.”
Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users
Her story sparked massive reactions across platforms, with users offering support, tough love, and personal insight.
-
KongoQueen: “I went back cause my own story was the strength I needed to move.”
-
temmy_ACCA: “I never did care job. I did factory, kitchen, teaching assistant roles. Now I’m an accountant.”
-
jhummielifestyle: “Going back home will not help. That ₦500k is no longer helpful with Nigeria’s current economy.”
-
vace_mamah: “She needs to relax. Nobody travels out and has it figured out immediately.”
-
cpt_rems: “Try Chinese-speaking jobs. Tour companies or consulates might need your language skills.”
The Bigger Picture
Her story reflects the harsh reality many Nigerian migrants face abroad—especially those who relocate without fully understanding the transition challenges. It also spotlights the gap between social media portrayals and real-life experiences.
While many argue she should endure the difficult phase abroad for long-term gain, others believe there’s no shame in returning home if it brings peace and stability.
