NLC threatens strike, gives FG 7-day ultimatum

NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu’s administration over its failure to constitute the governing board of the National Pension Commission.

The strike threat was contained in a communiqué signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, after the union’s Central Working Committee met on Wednesday to address pressing issues affecting Nigerian workers.

The union accused the Federal Government of diverting workers’ funds through the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and insisted that the NLC National Headquarters belongs to Nigerian workers, not the government.

Ajaero condemned what he described as “cyber and media bullying of the trade unions and leadership,” alongside alleged covert moves to amend the NSITF Act in a way that would disenfranchise workers and hand full control of the funds to the government.

The union demanded that the NSITF account for and return all allegedly diverted funds within seven days. It also insisted that the Pension Commission board be fully constituted in compliance with the law and submit a complete status report of the funds to the NLC within the same period.

“If at the end of these seven working days, nothing is done, the NLC will no longer guarantee industrial peace in the sector,” Ajaero warned.
