Air Peace Denies NSIB Claims of Pilot Substance Use in Port Harcourt Incident

Air Peace has refuted claims by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) that its crew members tested positive for alcohol and cannabis following an incident at Port Harcourt International Airport on July 13, 2025.

In a statement shared via its official X handle on Friday, the airline said it has not received any official communication from the NSIB regarding the preliminary findings.

The incident involved an Air Peace Boeing 737-524 aircraft (registration 5N-BQQ), which overshot the runway while operating a scheduled service from Lagos to Port Harcourt.

According to the airline, the captain of the flight was dismissed not because of substance use, but for failing to follow Crew Resource Management (CRM) principles and for ignoring the go-around procedure advised by the co-pilot.

“To date, we have never received any official communications from the NSIB on such findings over a month after the incident and after the testing of the crew for alcohol, which took place in less than an hour of the incident,” the statement read.

Air Peace confirmed that the co-pilot, who had called for a go-around, has since been reinstated with the approval of the NCAA (Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority).

“If he was involved in drug or alcohol use, the NCAA would not have cleared him to resume flight duties,” the airline added.

The airline also announced plans to step up internal checks by increasing the frequency of alcohol and drug testing for its crew, while reaffirming its commitment to Enhanced Crew Resource Management training and fitness-for-duty monitoring.
