Mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor has officially pulled out of the race for Ireland’s presidency, just hours before he was due to address meetings of Dublin City Council and Kildare County Council in a bid to secure the necessary nominations.
The 37-year-old UFC fighter announced his decision on Monday through a statement on social media, citing personal reflection and discussions with his family.
“Following careful reflection, and after consulting with my family, I have decided to withdraw my name,” McGregor wrote. “This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one at this moment in time.”
McGregor’s Political Ambition
McGregor first announced his intention to run for the presidency in 2024, sparking widespread debate in Ireland and beyond. Known for his outspoken personality and global fame as a former UFC champion, his political bid quickly attracted attention and divided opinion.
In his statement, McGregor expressed gratitude for the backing he had received over the past year:
“I am truly humbled by the support and encouragement from so many people.”
Upcoming Irish Election
Ireland is scheduled to head to the polls on 24 October. So far, three candidates have secured the necessary support from lawmakers or local authorities to appear on the ballot.
While McGregor’s withdrawal ends speculation over his presidential ambitions for now, it leaves open questions about whether the fighter-turned-celebrity could revisit politics in the future.
