The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the arraignment of Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, until October 27, granting him more time to prepare his defence against a fresh five-count charge.
Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the matter on Tuesday after Sowore’s counsel, Marshall Abubakar, argued that the court bailiff had not yet properly served the charge on his client. The case, filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) on behalf of the Federal Government, also lists X Inc. (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook Inc.) as co-defendants.
According to the charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025 and dated September 16, Sowore allegedly made a false claim by describing President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal” in posts shared on his X and Facebook pages.
When the case was called, Sowore appeared in court alongside Meta’s counsel, though there was no representation for X. DSS counsel Mohammed Abubakar had requested that the charges be read to the defendants, but the court held off to ensure proper service and preparation of defence.
The adjournment now sets the stage for a high-profile legal battle as Sowore, who previously contested the presidency under the African Action Congress (AAC) in 2019 and 2023, faces the charges on October 27.
