Johannesburg-based radio station Kaya 959 has officially severed ties with radio personality, DJ, and podcaster Sol Phenduka, following his suspension.
The station confirmed that his contract as a content provider for the breakfast show has been terminated, effective immediately, following an internal review.
The decision stems from controversial remarks Sol made about actress Minnie Dlamini on the MacG Vodcast, where he co-hosts alongside MacG. Acting Managing Executive of Kaya 959, Dave Tiltmann, said the broadcaster could not ignore the matter.
“Kaya 959 cannot and will not condone comments made on the MacG Vodcast. Misogynistic remarks made about Minnie Dlamini were unacceptable and inconsistent with respect owed to women. His alignment with those comments does not reflect who we are as a station, nor what our listeners expect of us,” Tiltmann stated.
Tiltmann revealed that this was not Sol’s first disciplinary issue. In June 2023, Sol had signed a written assurance promising to avoid conduct that could damage the station’s reputation after a previous controversy. His latest remarks were deemed a “further material breach” of his contract.
Kaya 959 emphasized that its core values of trust, integrity, accountability, respect, and inclusivity are non-negotiable, adding that its Independent Contractor Agreement allows for immediate termination if conduct brings the station into disrepute.
The dismissal follows weeks of speculation after Sol was suspended on 21 August 2025, with Kaya 959 announcing at the time that an internal process was underway.
Breaking his silence after the suspension, Sol claimed on the MacG Vodcast that he had “done nothing wrong” but refrained from details due to a confidentiality clause.
With Wednesday’s decision, Kaya 959 has now ended its relationship with Sol Phenduka, bringing his tenure at the station to an abrupt close.
