Liverpool have agreed a staggering £125m fee to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, in what will be a British transfer record.
According to BBC Sport, an agreement is now in place for the Sweden international to join the Reds, with a medical scheduled for Monday ahead of signing a six-year deal at Anfield.
The Reds had an initial £110m bid rejected earlier in August but are now set to secure their top summer target on transfer deadline day. The 25-year-old’s move comes just a week after Newcastle signed striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.
Isak’s future had been the subject of intense speculation all summer. Left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia with what the club called a “minor thigh injury,” the forward later trained alone at his former club Real Sociedad. He also released a pointed statement accusing Newcastle of breaking promises and insisting their “relationship can’t continue.”
Newcastle denied ever making assurances that Isak could leave, but the standoff left the striker sidelined for the Magpies’ first three Premier League games of the season—including a 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool.
Now, with the record-breaking deal struck, Liverpool look set to add a world-class striker to Jürgen Klopp’s squad as they chase Premier League and European glory this season.
