Maurene Comey, the lead federal prosecutor in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ high-profile criminal trial, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging her dismissal was “unlawful and unconstitutional.”
Comey, daughter of former FBI director James B. Comey, claims her firing after the verdict was politically motivated and tied to her father’s long-standing clash with President Donald Trump.
“The politically motivated termination of Ms. Comey … upends bedrock principles of our democracy and justice system,” her attorneys wrote in a filing obtained by Billboard.
“Assistant United States Attorneys like Ms. Comey must do their jobs without fearing or favoring any political party or perspective.”
Her legal team further alleged:
“Ms. Comey’s termination was designed to retaliate against her based on her familial relation as the daughter of James B. Comey, or because of her perceived political affiliation and beliefs, or both. No other plausible explanation exists for her termination—and certainly none was provided.”
Maurene Comey says she sought clarification from Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton but was told, “All I can say is it came from Washington. I can’t tell you anything else.”
As for Diddy’s case, the jury acquitted him of sex trafficking and racketeering but convicted him on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. His sentencing is scheduled for October 3.
In addition to her work on Diddy’s trial, Maurene Comey previously served as a lead prosecutor in the Ghislaine Maxwell case, which ended in Maxwell’s 2021 conviction and 20-year prison sentence.
