“Coming from someone who cant pay rent” – Aisha Yesufu Explains Why Government Thinks Nigerians Are Not Suffering

Aisha Yesufu Accuses President Tinubu of Undermining National Institutions

Political activist Aisha Yesufu has shed light on why the Nigerian government may believe citizens are not going through economic hardship, despite widespread struggles across the country.

In a post shared on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the co-founder of the Bring Back Our Girls movement said the people suffering the most are often the ones defending the current administration.

Her comment comes amid growing complaints from Nigerians about the escalating cost of living since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.

Recall that Tinubu, during his inaugural speech, announced the removal of fuel subsidy, a move that triggered ripple effects across every sector of the economy.

“Why won’t the government say Nigerians are lying when they say there is suffering in the land? The same people suffering are the ones at the forefront of defending the government,” Aisha Yesufu wrote.

Quoting human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, Yesufu expressed disbelief that citizens struggling to afford basic needs could still defend the government responsible for their hardship.

“It is baffling that someone who doesn’t have one million naira to pay house rent is defending a regime that has wrecked the economy and impoverished Nigerians,” she added.
