Dutch midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong has officially committed his long-term future to FC Barcelona, ending months of speculation about a potential departure by signing a new contract that keeps him at the Camp Nou until June 2029.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, revealing that Barcelona will hold a formal signing ceremony to celebrate the renewal.
“Barcelona confirm new deal agreed for Frenkie de Jong as a formal act will take place tomorrow. New contract valid until June 2029,” Romano posted.
The 28-year-old, who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 for around €75 million, has since become a cornerstone of the team’s midfield. Known for his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and press resistance, De Jong remains one of the most consistent performers in Hansi Flick’s squad.
According to reports from Spain, De Jong’s new deal includes a revised salary structure, reducing his base wage to about €12 million per season — a move that eases Barcelona’s ongoing financial strain. His previous contract, extended during the COVID-19 pandemic, contained deferred payments that had grown increasingly expensive for the club.
Frenkie de Jong was among several senior players who agreed to defer wages to help the club through the financial crisis, but those deferred costs later contributed to the team’s economic pressure. In 2022, Barcelona even considered selling him to balance their books, with Manchester United mounting a serious pursuit. However, De Jong made it clear he had no desire to leave.
“I’ve always been a Barça fan since I was a kid. This is my dream club,” the midfielder said earlier this year when addressing speculation about his future.
Since arriving in Catalonia, Frenkie de Jong has made over 250 appearances and helped the team secure six major trophies, including two La Liga titles.
