The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has pledged to ensure credible, free, and fair elections across Nigeria.
Prof. Amupitan made the promise on Thursday while addressing INEC staff for the first time shortly after being sworn in by President Bola Tinubu.
He emphasized that one of his foremost responsibilities is to restore public confidence in the electoral process and assure Nigerians that their votes truly count.
The INEC Chairman noted that his immediate focus would be on the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State, urging staff members to uphold integrity and transparency in the conduct of the poll.
Amupitan also assured the Commission’s workforce that staff welfare would be a top priority during his tenure.
“The journey ahead is a challenging one, but my appointment as the Chairman of INEC is divine,” he said. “Let us uphold the values of democracy and work tirelessly for the credibility of all elections.
“Now I will stress that we should not compromise our values and processes. There are consequences. So the integrity of our elections is not even something we should negotiate.
“The tasks may be challenging, but if we stand united, there is nothing we cannot achieve,” he added.
Prof. Amupitan further assured the Commission’s staff of improved working conditions, stating, “I assure you that we’ll work as seriously and tirelessly as possible to ensure that our working conditions are conducive and that our staff are given the necessary resources to excel.”
