Minister Of Power, Adebayo Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has disclosed that Nigeria is currently negotiating a $2 billion loan with the Export-Import Bank of China (China Exim Bank) to fund the construction of a new “super grid” designed to significantly improve electricity supply across the country.

Speaking at an economic summit in Abuja, Adelabu said the ambitious project aims to decentralize power generation and reconnect major industries that have long abandoned the unreliable national grid due to constant outages.

According to the minister, the new transmission network will link Nigeria’s eastern and western regions, where most of the country’s large industries are located. He added that the plan will make power distribution more efficient and attract heavy power users back to the grid.

Nigeria’s power grid has struggled for years with frequent system collapses, poor generation capacity, and weak infrastructure. Adelabu stated that the proposed super grid will help stabilize the system, reduce disruptions, and ensure consistent power supply to industrial zones.

He also revealed that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has already approved funding for the project, while highlighting the recent tariff adjustments for urban users, which have boosted industry revenue by 70% in 2024. The figure, he noted, could rise by another 41% to reach about ₦2.4 trillion ($1.6 billion) before the end of the year.
