Nigerian singer and songwriter Omawumi Megbele, popularly known as Omawumi, has revealed that meeting award-winning producer Cobhams Asuquo marked a major turning point in her music journey.
Speaking in a recent interview with Hip TV, the mother of two reflected on how their first encounter changed her life and set her on the path to lasting success in the Nigerian music industry.
“The first time we met, he just called. I knew we met on the show, and he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo—you know he likes to funkify his name. There is a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it,’” she recalled.
Omawumi said she accepted the offer without hesitation, unaware that it would become a life-changing opportunity.
“I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years. Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture,” she said.
The Bottom Belle crooner, who rose to fame after emerging as the runner-up on Idols West Africa in 2007, described Cobhams as one of the few people who believed in her potential from the beginning.
According to her, the collaboration opened several doors, leading to endorsement deals, brand partnerships, and future projects that helped define her musical legacy.
Cobhams Asuquo, a celebrated producer known for working with top Nigerian acts such as Asa, Timi Dakolo, Waje, and Banky W, has produced several of Omawumi’s hit songs and continues to be a respected figure in African music production.
