‘We have suffered a lot as a family’- Lioniel Messi’s nephew

Lionel Messi’s nephew and godson, Tomas Messi, has revealed that the family has “suffered a lot” over the years due to the global fame of the Inter Miami and Argentina superstar.

After rising to prominence at Barcelona, Messi quickly became one of football’s greatest icons. Now an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and the most decorated player of all time, the 38-year-old continues to perform at the highest level. Reports suggest that he is close to agreeing on a new contract with Inter Miami, which could see him emulate long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo by playing into his 40s.

Messi appears content with life in South Florida, where he lives with his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, and their three sons. Family has always played a central role in the footballer’s life, and his nephew Tomas remains part of his close-knit circle.

Speaking to La Nacion, Tomas said: “Despite living abroad, he has always been very family-oriented, and we have a wonderful relationship. He makes sure to check in on you, we visit him whenever we can, and he also comes when he can, especially during the holidays and when the national team plays in Argentina.”

Tomas, who once dreamed of becoming a professional footballer before pursuing a career in journalism, described how the family has shared both Messi’s triumphs and trials. Over the course of his legendary career, Messi has lifted 46 trophies, including a historic World Cup title and a record-breaking number of Ballon d’Ors.

Reflecting on his uncle’s journey, Tomas said: “Everything that has happened in recent years has been pure joy. We always support him. Now we are a little sad after the last official match. It’s the final stretch, as everyone says, and we never want it to end, but the truth is that what he is experiencing is beautiful.

“On the other hand, we have also suffered a lot as a family. But we are always there for each other. He relies on us and we help him… Leo is another member of the family, and we treat him as such. He is relaxed, he is just another uncle and not a public figure or the best footballer in the world.”

Messi is widely expected to represent Argentina at next summer’s World Cup as the team defends its crown, though he has yet to confirm his participation. Tomas noted that his uncle remains undecided on the matter, saying that he “doesn’t say anything” and will “decide when the time comes.”

Tomas also reflected on the pressure of sharing Messi’s last name, admitting that it once felt like a burden. “At the time, my surname affected me. I felt it was a burden because it seemed like I had to be just like my uncle. It wasn’t easy. And when I started playing again, that weight didn’t influence me as much… I didn’t care what people thought or said,” he shared.

Despite the challenges, Tomas expressed deep pride in his uncle’s achievements, describing Messi’s story as one of joy, humility, and enduring family strength.
