Nigerian music star D’banj has opened up once again about the dissolution of the legendary Mo’Hits Records, stating that the decision to end the partnership was entirely Don Jazzy’s.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, D’banj said his longtime collaborator and producer was “100 per cent responsible” for the 2012 split that marked one of the most talked-about moments in Nigerian music history.
According to the Oliver Twist crooner, he has no regrets about how their relationship unfolded because the separation did not originate from him.
“If I were to go back in time, I wouldn’t have done anything differently regarding my relationship with Don Jazzy, especially when the idea to go our separate ways didn’t come from me. The idea came from Don Jazzy, which is why we are still cool,” he said.
D’banj also revealed that following their breakup, Don Jazzy gave him full ownership of his music catalogue, along with several unreleased tracks.
“Jazzy gave me 100 per cent of my catalogue and maybe 10 other songs I have not released… Even though he had his opinion, I knew we needed to cement that global movement, and I’m glad God still did it for us with ‘Oliver Twist,’ which was the last record we released together,” he added.
While he believes the split was destined and allowed both men to explore new creative directions, D’banj admitted that he still misses the undeniable synergy they shared in the studio.
He noted that the legacy of Mo’Hits — and the era-defining records they crafted — remains one he will always hold close.
