EPL: Amorim Admits He Nearly Quit After Turbulent First Season

Ruben Amorim Blames English Media Criticism for Affecting Manchester United Players’ Confidence

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has opened up about the difficult moments he faced during his first year at Old Trafford, admitting that last season’s struggles made him question whether he was the right man for the job.

As Amorim marks his one-year anniversary as United boss on Saturday — when the Red Devils take on Nottingham Forest — the Portuguese tactician reflected candidly on a debut campaign that tested his resolve.

United endured a tough season, finishing 15th in the Premier League, losing the Europa League final, and starting the current campaign with just one win in their first five league games.

“There were some moments that were tough to deal with, losing so many games was so hard for me because this is Manchester United,” he said.
“The position we had last year, putting all the attention on the Europa League and not winning it, that was massive. I struggled a lot and thought maybe it wasn’t meant to be.”

However, Amorim’s fortunes — and the team’s — have shifted in recent weeks. United have won five of their last seven Premier League matches, including crucial victories over Chelsea and Liverpool, climbing to sixth place and reigniting hopes of European qualification.

“Today it’s the opposite,” Amorim continued. “Now I feel it was the best decision of my life. I want to be here, but for that, I need to keep winning, starting with Nottingham Forest.”

Despite the turnaround, the United manager urged caution, emphasizing the importance of consistency and focus.

“It’s hard to say that the tough times are over,” he noted. “Football is full of ups and downs. I trust my players more, and they trust me more — that comes with wins.
“We are in a better place now, and we feel that, but we must stay alert and pay attention to the details.”
