Grammy-winning Nigerian music star, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has opened up about dealing with personal struggles amid growing controversy over his recent comments about fans.
The uproar began after a viral video showed the singer saying he never begged anyone to be his fan and that he only wanted “rich fans.” The statement triggered widespread criticism across social media, with many accusing him of being insensitive and dismissive of his supporters.
Reacting to the backlash in a post shared via his Instagram story, the ‘Last Last’ hitmaker insisted the comment was taken out of context. According to him, the remark was a private joke made while interacting with his band members and was not directed at his fanbase, contrary to public perception.
Burna Boy further revealed that behind the scenes, he has been battling personal challenges. He noted that although he does not seek public sympathy or assistance, the constant misinterpretation of his words has taken a toll. He urged critics to either allow him peace or leave him alone.
“If you hate me so much either kill me or leave me alone. I’m fighting my own battles and I never come out here to look for pity or help,” he wrote, stressing that he values the love and respect shown by genuine supporters.
The singer also used the opportunity to lend his voice to humanitarian calls, advocating for an end to insecurity and violence in Nigeria, as well as ongoing crises in Congo and Sudan.
“I love who loves me and respect who respects me. Free Sudan, free Congo, free Nigeria,” he added.
