Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has urged his side to build on their emphatic 4-1 victory over Everton on Saturday after finally securing their first Premier League away win of the season.
The Magpies struck early at Goodison Park, with defender Malick Thiaw scoring the fastest goal of the campaign just 52 seconds in. Teenage midfielder Lewis Miley and forward Nick Woltemade added two more before the break, putting Newcastle firmly in control.
Thiaw completed his brace in the second half, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall grabbed a consolation goal for Everton. The win marked Newcastle’s first league victory on the road since April, prompting joyous celebrations with the travelling supporters at the final whistle.
“That was really important as we haven’t had that feeling enough or at all,” Howe said after the match. “Very pleased today that we were able to put that right and give them that winning feeling to go back to Newcastle with. I’m just pleased I don’t have to answer the dreaded questions on it.”
Despite the convincing scoreline, Howe remained cautious about declaring the team’s away struggles resolved. “We have a lot of work to do to say we have solved some of the issues we have had, but it is a big moment for us. A step forward,” he noted. “Time will tell. I’m not going to make any big statements, there is a long way to go.”
Everton manager David Moyes, meanwhile, refused to blame the absence of Idrissa Gueye—sent off at Manchester United earlier in the week—for his side’s poor performance. “It could be that, but it could have been the quality of Newcastle United. You mustn’t underestimate them, they’re a Champions League team,” he said.
