Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned that politics must not be degraded into an arena for unruly or irresponsible conduct.
Jonathan issued the warning on Thursday during the 10th anniversary dinner of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, which also marked his 68th birthday. He expressed concern that Nigeria’s democracy is being stifled by reckless political attitudes and urged leaders to embrace responsibility, civility and a commitment to nation-building.
He stressed that the sustainability of democratic governance depends on accountable and disciplined leadership from all political actors.
CREEBHILLS reports that the ceremony attracted a distinguished audience, including African statesmen, diplomats, political leaders and business executives.
“Politics is not for rascals. It is for people who want to build, not destroy,” Jonathan declared, cautioning that the surge in aggressive rhetoric and hostile conduct within the political space is eroding democratic resilience across the continent.
Reflecting on the motivation behind establishing his foundation, the former president noted that the organisation has spent the past decade promoting diplomacy, governance reforms, peacebuilding, mediation and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
Goodluck Jonathan also condemned the rising wave of violent attacks and kidnappings nationwide. He urged leaders at all levels to take their responsibilities more seriously, prioritise the safety of citizens and reinforce the pillars of Nigeria’s democratic order.
