Nollywood actor Daniel Etim-Effiong has shared a deeply personal account of a painful episode from his university days that left a lasting impact on his life, choices, and faith.
In an interview with Taymesan, the actor revealed that he was once expelled from the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), after being wrongly accused of belonging to a cult.
According to him, the allegation came as a complete shock, as he considered himself a committed Christian and an active member of a student fellowship at the time.
Etim-Effiong explained that the expulsion devastated him emotionally, particularly because he believed he was innocent and expected support from his fellowship.
Instead, he said the group failed to stand by him or challenge the decision, leaving him feeling abandoned and betrayed.
After leaving the university, the actor relocated to Jos, Plateau State. While the new environment initially gave him a sense of freedom, he said it also fueled anger, confusion, and frustration.
During that period, he picked up habits such as smoking and womanizing, which he linked to his emotional state and disappointment with life.
The experience also strained his relationship with God. Etim-Effiong said he struggled to understand why such a situation would happen to him, especially given his devotion at the time. Feeling unsupported and hurt, he gradually withdrew from church activities and stopped attending fellowship meetings.
Recounting the incident, he said:
“That same year I got expelled from the university for belonging to cult, for belonging to confraternity. Which confraternity? I was a church boy.
“It was in Jos I started smoking, it was in Jos I started womanizing, because I was free and I was almost angry at God. I kept asking, ‘Why did you let this thing happen to me?’ I was an SU, and you didn’t even defend me.
“I told the fellowship in FUTMINNA then, ‘You guys should protest.’”
The actor’s revelation has sparked conversations online about faith, betrayal, and how unresolved injustice can shape life decisions, especially during formative years.
