Veteran Nollywood actress Carol King has spoken candidly about her past struggles with addiction and the turning point that reshaped her spiritual life, revealing how she once lived a double life despite being actively involved in religious activities.
In a recent interview on Behind The Fame, the respected stage and screen actress recounted a moment that forced her to confront the disconnect between her lifestyle and her faith.
According to her, she had just finished smoking a cigarette when she was suddenly called upon to lead an opening prayer, an experience that left her deeply unsettled.
Reflecting on that period, Carol King explained that she was heavily indulging in smoking, drinking, and other excesses while outwardly participating in spiritual duties.
She said the contradiction made her realize that she was relying on her own understanding rather than genuine spiritual guidance.
The actress stressed that spirituality cannot be sustained through personal effort or intellectual knowledge alone. Instead, she said true transformation only comes through complete surrender to the Holy Spirit.
“When it comes to spiritual things, you shouldn’t fake it. It’s the Holy Spirit that has to carry and do everything.
Back then, I was doing it with my own knowledge,” she said. “I used to drink, I used to smoke, I used to do everything. You can imagine finishing a cigarette and knowing you’re about to take opening prayers.”
Carol King’s testimony has since resonated widely online, with many praising her honesty and openness about a journey that reflects growth, accountability, and spiritual renewal.
