Popular Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has shared candid thoughts on marriage, describing it as “overrated” while making it clear that she is not opposed to love or companionship.

Speaking during a recent interview on Naija FM Lagos, the 42-year-old actress said she is open to remarriage if it happens naturally, but she is no longer actively seeking it.

“I am open to remarriage if it comes, but I am not looking for it. I have learnt not to say ‘never’,” Jegede said.

Explaining her position, the actress argued that marriage often introduces pressures that strain relationships rather than strengthen them. According to her, many couples who dated for years before tying the knot end up separating shortly after marriage.

“I think marriage is overrated. A lot of people who dated for 10 to 15 years, got married and they broke up within two to three years. Sometimes, you wonder why such couples didn’t just remain unmarried,” she explained.

She added that the “marriage tag” can bring intolerance and unrealistic expectations, which can negatively affect relationships that once thrived without legal or societal labels.

“I think it is better to find who you love and just cohabit with them,” she stated.

Yvonne Jegede’s comments come years after her marriage to fellow actor Olakunle ‘Abounce’ Fawole ended in 2019, less than a year after it began. The actress had previously revealed that financial imbalance and lack of respect from her former husband contributed to the separation.

In earlier interviews, Jegede disclosed that she was the primary provider in the marriage and admitted she regretted prioritising love over financial stability, a decision she says taught her lasting life lessons.

Now focused on personal growth and fulfilment, the actress appears content embracing love on her own terms, without societal pressure to remarry.
