American rapper Wiz Khalifa could face up to nine months in prison in Romania over a marijuana-related offence, although his legal team is moving to overturn the ruling.
Romania’s Constanța Court of Appeal on Thursday, December 18, upheld an appeal filed by the DIICOT Constanța Territorial Service, seeking a custodial sentence for the rapper. The decision overturns an earlier ruling that imposed a fine of 3,000 lei (about 700 dollars).
However, the sentence is not yet final, as Wiz Khalifa’s lawyers have begun the appeal process in a bid to secure a different outcome.
The case arose from an incident in July 2024 when the rapper was arrested and briefly detained after performing at the Beach Please Festival in Costinești. During the performance, he was reportedly seen smoking marijuana on stage while dancing to Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg’s song The Next Episode.
Following the incident, Romanian authorities charged him under the country’s strict drug laws, which criminalise the possession and use of cannabis.
Legal analysts note that Romania enforces tough penalties for drug-related offences, a factor that could complicate efforts by the rapper’s legal team to have the sentence reduced or overturned.
