AFCON 2025: Ghanaian Referee Daniel Nii Laryea’s Instagram Page Taken Down After Nigeria–Morocco Clash

The Instagram page of Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea has been taken down following backlash over his officiating in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final between Nigeria and Morocco.

Concerns had trailed Nii Laryea’s appointment ahead of the encounter due to the long-standing rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria. Those fears intensified during the match as the referee made a number of controversial decisions.

One of the most disputed calls was a yellow card shown to Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey, which resulted in a one-match suspension.

Following Nigeria’s defeat, angry fans reportedly located the Ghanaian official’s social media accounts on Instagram and Twitter and mass-reported them. Checks by DAILY POST confirmed that his Instagram page is no longer accessible.

Reacting after the match, Nigeria defender Bright Osayi-Samuel openly criticised the officiating.

“The referee was appalling,” he said in the mixed zone. “I’m not saying that’s the reason why we lost but he was making very, very wrong decisions and it’s really painful to see that we have referees like that in a game like today.”
