OpenAI to Begin Testing Ads on ChatGPT as Costs Soar

OpenAI has announced it will begin testing ads on ChatGPT in the coming weeks, marking a significant shift in the business model of the widely used artificial intelligence chatbot as the company seeks to boost revenue and offset rising operating costs.

The company disclosed the plan in a blog post on Friday, stating that the ads will initially appear in the United States for free users and lower-tier subscribers. Premium Pro and Enterprise subscribers will remain ad-free.

The move answers a long-standing question around how generative AI platforms would eventually monetize their massive user bases, as developers have traditionally been cautious about introducing advertising that could disrupt user experience or trust.

However, the growing financial burden of running large-scale AI systems appears to have accelerated the decision. While ChatGPT is used by nearly one billion users, only a small fraction currently pay for subscription services, increasing pressure on OpenAI to diversify its revenue streams.

Since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022, OpenAI’s valuation has surged to about $500 billion following recent funding rounds, making it the most valuable private company in the world. Some analysts believe the company could eventually pursue a public listing at a valuation approaching $1 trillion.

Despite the lofty valuation, OpenAI continues to burn through significant cash, largely due to the immense computational power required to train and operate its models at scale.

With the introduction of ads, OpenAI’s strategy moves closer to the business models of technology giants such as Google and Meta, both of which fund their AI development through extensive advertising ecosystems. Amazon has also built a major advertising business across its retail and streaming platforms to support innovation.

“Ads aren’t a distraction from the generative AI race; they’re how OpenAI stays in it,” said Jeremy Goldman, an analyst at Emarketer.
“If ChatGPT turns on ads, OpenAI is admitting something simple and consequential: the race isn’t just about model quality anymore; it’s about monetizing attention without poisoning trust,” he added.

The timing of the announcement comes as Google continues to gain ground in the generative AI race, integrating AI features across services such as Gmail, Maps and YouTube, while expanding the capabilities of its Gemini chatbot to compete directly with ChatGPT.

OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has previously expressed concerns about advertising, warning that it could undermine trust in AI-generated content.

To address these concerns, OpenAI emphasized that advertisements will not influence ChatGPT’s responses and that user conversations will remain private from advertisers.

“Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you,” the company said. “Answers are optimized based on what’s most helpful to you. Ads are always separate and clearly labeled.”

As generative AI platforms mature, OpenAI’s decision signals a broader industry shift toward sustainable monetization as competition intensifies and operational costs continue to climb.
