Real Madrid Sack Xabi Alonso After Supercopa Defeat

Real Madrid have officially parted ways with head coach Xabi Alonso following the club’s 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Supercopa final.

The decision was announced less than 24 hours after the defeat, during which Alonso described the Supercopa as “the least important” competition the team would contest this season.

In a statement, the LaLiga giants confirmed that the separation was reached by mutual agreement.

“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach,” the statement read.

The club praised the former midfielder, describing him as a legend who embodies the values of Real Madrid.

“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the statement added.

Madrid also thanked Alonso and his technical crew for their service and wished them well in their future endeavours.

Alonso, a former Spain international, had been under growing pressure amid the club’s struggles in both LaLiga and the Champions League.

The timing of his dismissal comes just two days before Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey Round of 16 fixture against Albacete.
