Medical doctor and former reality TV star, Faith Adewale, has claimed that some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can contribute to mental health issues if left untreated.
Speaking on a recent episode of The Clarity Zone podcast co-hosted by media personality Nedu Wazobia, Adewale explained that neurosyphilis—an advanced stage of syphilis—can affect the brain and lead to mental problems.
According to him, neurosyphilis is the third stage of the infection and can interfere with how the brain functions, impacting a person’s thinking and behaviour. He added that prolonged, untreated STIs may be an underlying cause of mental illness in some patients.
Adewale stressed that there are many factors that can contribute to mental health challenges, but noted that infections affecting the brain should not be overlooked in discussions around mental illness.
