Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has stirred reactions on social media after appearing pleased that the Super Eagles failed to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) this year.
The Super Eagles missed out on a place in the final on Wednesday after losing 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco in the semi-final clash. The encounter ended 0–0 after regulation time and extra time, forcing a shootout in which the North Africans prevailed.
Nigeria had been chasing a fourth AFCON title, but their hopes were dashed after Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyeamachi missed their penalty kicks.
Reacting to the outcome, Speed Darlington took to X to express what many interpreted as satisfaction with the result. He wrote, “Thank God APC can’t add AFCON to their list of achievements to hide their years of failure. AFCON bye bye.”
Following the defeat, the Super Eagles will now face Egypt in the third-place match as they battle for the bronze medal.
