US-based Nigerian professor Uju Anya has opened up about discovering her attraction to women more than a decade into her marriage with her ex-husband.

Anya made the revelation during an appearance on WithChude, where she reflected on her personal journey, relationships, and evolving self-understanding.

According to her, her previous marriage was authentic and fulfilling, and was not entered into under false pretenses.

“It was not a fake marriage. I was genuinely in love and excited,” she said.
“Ten years into the marriage, I realised I needed to be with women, and he gave me permission to go ahead.”

Anya explained that her realization came gradually and did not invalidate the emotional sincerity of her earlier relationship. She noted that the process involved honesty, communication, and mutual respect.

The professor is now married to Sirry Alang, whom she described as her “dream wife” and “sweetheart.” She said their relationship is grounded not only in partnership but also in family integration.

“We did not just get married; we blended a family,” Anya said.

The couple got engaged in March 2024 and later tied the knot the same year.

Uju Anya is a lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States. She gained widespread public attention in 2022 after a tweet she made about the late Elizabeth II went viral.

Her wife, Sirry Alang, is a Cameroonian-American health services researcher and an associate professor of Sociology and Health, Medicine and Society at Lehigh University.

Both women were previously married to men and have children from their earlier relationships.

The interview has since sparked online discussions about identity, self-discovery, and the evolving nature of relationships.
