Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has confirmed that he will undergo surgery after sustaining an injury during a match last weekend, revealing that he will be sidelined for several months.
In an emotional message shared on Instagram, Ter Stegen opened up about the setback, describing it as one of the toughest challenges of his career despite his typically positive mindset.
The German international explained that the injury occurred shortly after his arrival in Girona, where he said he was welcomed warmly and had been eager to contribute to the team’s objectives.
“Last weekend, the worst happened: I got injured during the match,” he wrote.
“I was really looking forward to being part of the team and helping achieve our shared goal.”
Ter Stegen noted that while his role has now changed due to the injury, his commitment to supporting the team remains unwavering.
He praised the players and staff, described the environment as a family, and thanked them for their support since the incident.
Acknowledging the difficult reality of being sidelined, the goalkeeper said stepping away from training and competition would be especially challenging, as those moments represent the greatest joy for any athlete.
“I have to put all of that on hold for several months, as I’ve decided to undergo surgery,” he said.
Despite the blow, Ter Stegen ended his message on a note of determination and optimism.
“I will be back.”
The injury represents a significant setback, but the experienced shot-stopper’s message suggests he is already focused on recovery and a return to action.
