Afrobeats singer Simi, born Simisola Kosoko, has sparked controversy after calling for capital punishment for rapists.
Nigeria has faced a wave of sexual assault allegations in recent weeks, prompting renewed public concern.
Reacting on Tuesday night via X, Simi appealed to citizens and authorities to take stronger action against sexual violence.
“I’m sickkk of this. Stop raping women. They need to castrate rapists and burn them,” she wrote.
Her remarks quickly generated debate online, with some arguing that similar penalties should apply to individuals who make false rape accusations.
Simi responded that her advocacy was focused on supporting victims of sexual assault, not those falsely accused, a stance that further fueled discussion.
Addressing critics, she stated that nearly all the women she knows have experienced sexual assault at some point in their lives. She argued that concerns about false accusations should not silence conversations about sexual violence.
“How many of your friends have actually assaulted women as vibes?? Women are terrified to go out. Women in their homes are not safe either. Ask your sisters. Ask your female friends and your girlfriends. Ask your wives. We’re not all crazy. Stop raping women,” she added.
The singer also urged men to hold one another accountable, claiming that failure to challenge harmful behaviour contributes to an environment that enables sexual violence.
