Dominic Solanke produced a moment of pure brilliance to dent Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes, scoring a sensational scorpion kick as Tottenham Hotspur came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side appeared to be cruising in north London after first-half goals from Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo put City firmly in control.

However, Tottenham responded strongly after the break. Solanke first pulled one back before delivering a stunning acrobatic finish that instantly became a contender for goal of the season, hauling the hosts level and igniting the stadium.

The England striker’s audacious effort drew comparisons with Olivier Giroud’s famous scorpion kick for Arsenal against Crystal Palace in 2017.

Ironically, it was Arsenal who benefitted most from Solanke’s heroics. City’s dropped points leave them six points behind the league leaders, who had already strengthened their position with a 4-0 win over Leeds on Saturday.

With third-placed Aston Villa also losing to Brentford, it proved a near-perfect weekend for Arsenal in the title race.

For Tottenham, the comeback offered another morale boost for head coach Thomas Frank, coming just days after guiding Spurs into the Champions League last 16 with a win away at Eintracht Frankfurt.

City’s struggles, meanwhile, continue to raise questions. Despite recent wins over Wolves and Galatasaray, Guardiola’s side once again looked short of their dominant best, underlining a growing inconsistency.

Having won just one of their last six league games, City now face pressure to respond quickly. They return to action on Wednesday in the League Cup semi-final against Newcastle, before a crucial Premier League clash with Liverpool next weekend.

Solanke’s moment of magic may yet prove one of the defining images of the title run-in.
