President Bola Tinubu has replaced Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun with Assistant Inspector General Tunji Disu, according to sources familiar with the development.
A source in the presidency told Premium Times that Egbetokun was asked to resign during a meeting held on Monday at the Presidential Villa.
Preparations are reportedly underway for a formal handover ceremony from Egbetokun to AIG Disu.
Egbetokun became the 22nd Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023, with his appointment later confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.
He was originally scheduled to retire on September 4, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, a 2024 amendment to the Police Act permitted the IGP to serve a fixed four-year term, extending his tenure until October 31, 2027, unless removed by the president.
During his time in office, Egbetokun faced public criticism, including concerns over human rights issues, although the presidency had previously maintained that his continued stay in office was lawful under the amended legislation.
As of the time of filing this report, the presidency has not issued an official statement on the change in police leadership.
