Legendary music producer Dr. Dre has officially joined the ranks of billionaires.
On March 10, Forbes released its updated list of “The Richest People in the World,” confirming that the hip-hop icon now has a net worth of $1 billion, largely accumulated through his music career and his headphone company, Beats Electronics.
With the new valuation, Dr. Dre is ranked as the 3,332nd richest person in the world, tied with global music star Beyonce. The ranking also places him as the second-richest hip-hop artist behind Jay-Z and among only six musicians on the global list.
Dr. Dre’s inclusion on the list comes 12 years after he claimed he was hip-hop’s first billionaire during the sale of Beats Electronics to Apple in 2014 for $3 billion. When the deal was finalised, the producer reportedly earned about $500 million from the transaction, making him the richest hip-hop artist at the time but still short of billionaire status.
By 2022, reports indicated that his net worth had dropped to around $400 million. However, the following year he reportedly sold a portion of his music assets to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group for $250 million.
The assets included “two of his solo albums and his share of N.W.A artist royalties; his producer royalties; and the writer’s share of his song catalog where he doesn’t own publishing, which may include the writer’s share of songs on his The Chronic album,” according to Billboard.
Beyond music, Dr. Dre has continued to grow his wealth through investments and real estate. Most recently, he sold his home in Malibu, California, for $16.5 million.
