Filmmaker and author Laju Iren made a strong cinema debut, as her film Onobiren: A Woman’s Story grossed ₦30.1 million in its first three days in cinemas.
According to figures released by FilmOne Entertainment, the movie earned the amount across cinemas in Nigeria and Ghana during its opening weekend from March 6 to March 8.
The film also emerged as the highest-grossing title in Nigerian cinemas during the period, outperforming both Nollywood productions and international releases.
The performance marks Iren’s first cinema release as an executive producer, positioning the project as a significant step into the theatrical film market.
The film’s release was strategically timed for Women’s Month, with its storyline focusing on themes of identity, resilience, and female solidarity.
Reacting to the impressive box office result, Laju Iren took to social media to express gratitude to audiences across West Africa.
“This is the doing of the Lord! Thank you West Africa! Thank you Nigeria! Highest grossing film the weekend overall, whether Nollywood or Hollywood,” she wrote.
“Thank you all for showing up! This is just the beginning. Many more milestones to reach and records to break! Onobiren is showing in all cinemas nationwide!”
