Ambassador-designate Reno Omokri has stated that Nigeria is significantly safer today than it was ten years ago.
Speaking on Channels Television on March 4, Omokri compared the country’s current security situation to that of 2016, when Nigeria faced heightened security challenges.
“In 2016, we were the third most terrorized nation in the world. Now, we are not even in the top five,” he said.
Omokri pointed to major public events and tourism figures as indicators of improved security. According to him, about 1.2 million tourists visited Lagos during the 2025 “Detty December” festivities without any significant reported security incidents.
He also referenced the Argungu Fishing Festival in Kebbi State, which he said attracted 50,000 fishermen and 500,000 spectators in February without any recorded killings or major disturbances.
Similarly, he cited the Ojude Oba Festival held in June last year, noting that about 200,000 attendees from across the world participated without any fatal incidents.
While acknowledging that localized security issues still exist, Omokri maintained that the overall situation in Nigeria has improved compared to a decade ago.
“Nigeria is much better than it was ten years ago,” he concluded.
