Nollywood actor Prince Eke has criticised Nigerian celebrities, saying many of them are not fit to influence the public because they remain silent about the country’s governance issues.
The actor shared his views in a post on his Instagram page, accusing several entertainers of refusing to speak out against corruption and poor leadership because they hope to benefit from politicians during election campaigns.
According to Eke, many actors and musicians prefer to align themselves with politicians for financial gain rather than advocate for systemic changes that would benefit their own industry.
“The earlier you understand that most of these so-called celebrities are not worth being influenced by, the better for you,” he wrote.
Prince Eke argued that if Nigeria’s system worked properly, actors would still be earning royalties from films they featured in decades ago. Instead, he said many entertainers choose to support the same political figures they should be challenging.
“Actors and musicians alike watched Nigeria drown in corruption and bad governance and kept their mouths shut. Why? Because they are waiting for politicians to throw them a few peanuts to come and dance during campaigns,” he stated.
The Nollywood star also alleged that financial struggles push some celebrities to compromise their values.
“So don’t be shocked when you see them standing beside our oppressors. Many of them are broke, desperate, and perfectly willing to sell their conscience to the highest bidder,” he added.
He concluded his remarks with a blunt statement about why some entertainers choose silence.
“After all, conscience no dey put food for their table.”
His comments have since sparked debate online, with some users agreeing with his criticism of celebrity influence in politics, while others argued that entertainers should not be expected to lead political activism.
