IGP Tunji Disu Sets Up Committee to Oversee State Police Implementation

Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police and drive the rollout of his policing reforms following his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General.

According to TVC News, Disu held his first formal engagement with senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday, days after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously ratified his appointment.

His confirmation cleared the way for his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

Committee on State Police

Disu appointed Olu Ogunsakin to lead the eight-member committee tasked with guiding the framework for state police implementation.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to decentralise policing and allow different tiers of government to play a more active role in addressing security challenges across the country.

Emphasis on Professionalism and Human Rights

Addressing the top hierarchy of the force, the IGP said leadership within the police must be defined by responsibility rather than rank.

“Leadership is not about position but responsibility,” Disu said, stressing that professionalism and accountability should guide police operations nationwide.

He added that authority within the force is strongest when exercised with restraint and respect for human rights.

According to him, every Nigerian must be treated with dignity, fairness, and justice, regardless of status or background.

Strengthening Internal Oversight

Disu also announced plans to reinforce internal accountability mechanisms within the police.

He directed that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad be empowered to function independently to improve oversight and address misconduct within the force.

The new IGP said the reforms are intended to build public trust in law enforcement while ensuring more effective and citizen-focused policing across Nigeria.
