Federico Valverde put on one of the Champions League performances of the season on Wednesday night as Real Madrid dismantled Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their round of 16 clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Uruguayan midfielder scored three goals in 22 minutes before half-time, the first hat-trick of his career, and left Pep Guardiola’s side with an enormous mountain to climb before the second leg in Manchester next Tuesday.

The context makes it even more striking. Madrid were without Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo Goes due to injury.

Coach Alvaro Arbeloa started 18-year-old Thiago Pitarch in midfield. City had beaten Madrid in the league phase and came into the game in better form. Everything pointed toward a competitive, tight contest. Instead, it was a rout.

Valverde’s first came against the run of play. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball forward, City’s Nico O’Reilly misjudged it completely, and Valverde burst through one-on-one. Donnarumma rushed out to close the angle, but Valverde went around him and rolled into an empty net in the 20th minute.

Seven minutes later, he did it again. Vinicius Junior found him in space, and Valverde drilled a composed finish past Donnarumma to make it two.

The third was the best of the lot. Valverde flicked Brahim Diaz’s pass over defender Marc Guehi with a deft touch and then met the dropping ball with a volley that flew into the net. The Bernabeu erupted. For the first time in a long time, Madrid looked like itself.

The city never really recovered. Guardiola had set up with an attacking lineup and only two central midfielders, leaving Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki on the bench, a gamble that backfired badly once Valverde started finding space in behind.

Erling Haaland was kept quiet all night by Antonio Rudiger and Dean Huijsen and was eventually substituted even while City were chasing the game.

Vinicius had the chance to make it four from the penalty spot in the second half, but Donnarumma guessed correctly and made the save. Courtois then produced a stunning leg save late on to deny O’Reilly and keep the clean sheet intact.

For Valverde personally, the performance felt like a statement. He spent much of the first half of the season deployed at right-back under Xabi Alonso, a role that limited him.

Since Arbeloa took over in January, he has returned to midfield and has been one of La Liga’s most dangerous players. A last-minute winner at Celta Vigo on Friday. A hat-trick against City on Wednesday.

Madrid goes to Manchester next week with a three-goal cushion and a squad that is suddenly playing with the kind of confidence that has carried them through Champions League nights like this before.

City needs three goals to level the tie. Based on Wednesday night, that feels a long way away.
