“Those Shoes Are Admired, Not Mine” — Tolu Odukoya Opens Up on Living Beyond Her Parents’ Legacy

Associate senior pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, Tolu Odukoya, has spoken candidly about the pressure of legacy and why she is not trying to step into the exact path of her late mother, Bimbo Odukoya, and her father, Taiwo Odukoya.

Speaking during a conversation on the Dear Ife series on YouTube, Tolu made it clear that while she deeply respects her parents’ impact, she does not see herself as a replacement.

“Those shoes, my feet are not inside. The shoes are admired,” she said.

According to her, her parents’ legacy is something she honours, but not something she feels pressured to replicate. Instead, she views her background as a strong foundation that comes with its own responsibilities.

She explained that the standard set by her parents leaves little room for excuses, adding that any failure to live rightly would be a personal responsibility.

“If you now come and put one rug on it and the rug is dirty, it’s on you,” she stated.

Tolu also opened up about the weight of expectations placed on her as a first child, admitting that the role comes with responsibilities she never actively chose.

“The office has so much responsibility and I did not want it,” she said.

Reflecting on her upbringing, she shared a touching memory of her mother speaking about her future even before she was born.

“She’ll put her hand on her stomach and say: ‘This one is going to sing,’” she recalled.

Over time, she said she came to understand those moments as expressions of belief and hope in her future.

For Tolu Odukoya, the journey is not about filling anyone’s shoes but about walking her own path while staying grounded in the values she was raised with.
