Former Brazilian football star Dani Alves has been granted temporary release from prison after serving 14 months behind bars.
However, his freedom is contingent upon the outcome of his appeal against a rape conviction and he must pay a significant bail fee of €1million.
Dani Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in jail and ordered to pay €150,000 in damages to the victim last month.
Despite being released on bail, he is subject to strict conditions. These include surrendering both passports, staying away from the victim and their frequented places by 1,000 meters, attending weekly legal meetings, and promptly responding to authorities.
Originally deemed a flight risk, Alves faces immediate return to prison if he attempts to escape or breaches any conditions.
The appeal process is expected to last at least another 13 months, mirroring his previous conviction duration.
This means if Dani Alves meets the requirements stated, he could have a year and three months with his family.
The decision to grant bail comes amidst concerns that Alves, with Brazil lacking an extradition policy with Spain, could evade justice by returning to his homeland.
However, during a recent court hearing, Alves vowed not to run away, but remain in Spain, where he owns property in Barcelona.
