Neymar avoided a $3 million fine after a court ruling dismissed accusations of environmental damage for constructing a lake at his mansion.
The controversy began when a complaint of an environmental crime was made to Mangaratiba City Hall, triggered by a video Neymar shared on Instagram showcasing the building of the lake in Mangaratiba.
Despite investigations by various agencies, including the attorney general’s office and environmental protection bodies, Judge Adriana Ramos de Mello ruled in Neymar’s favor, citing a report from the state environmental authority stating that the project did not violate any environmental regulations.
Judge Adriana Ramos de Mello stated: “As the applied fines were in the millions of dollars, continuing to demand (payment)… will inflict substantial, disproportionate and even illegal prejudice”.
Neymar acquired the Mangaratiba mansion in 2016 and, according to Brazilian media reports, the property boasts luxurious amenities such as a heliport, spa and gym.
The injured Brazilian forward has reportedly rejoined his Al-Hilal team-mates ahead of the Saudi Super Cup final against Al-Ittihad to boost their morale from the sidelines.
