Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka recently discussed his Nigerian heritage in an interview with the BBC.
The 22-year-old emphasized the importance of his Nigerian roots and elaborated on the significance of his Yoruba name.
Despite being born in England, Saka has always embraced his Nigerian heritage, as his parents are Nigerian.
A product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, Saka has consistently recognized and celebrated his Nigerian culture and background.
During a recent appearance on the BBC Five’s Football Daily Show, Bukayo Saka shared insights into his connection to Nigeria.
He spoke about his heritage, stating, “It means a lot to me. Obviously growing up with Nigerian parents but I grew up in this country, so both sides mean a lot to me.”
When asked about the meaning of his Yoruba name, Saka proudly translated it, saying, “It means added joy.”
He added, “I like my name. If I remember correctly, I think my grandma gave it to me. I have to double-check with my parents, but I think I’m right.”
