BREAKING: Kamala Harris announces running mate for 2024 US election

US Vice President Kamala Harris tests positive for COVID-19

Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States, has selected Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, as her running mate for the upcoming Presidential election in November.

Walz, aged 60, emerged as an unexpected contender and was chosen over other prominent figures such as Josh Shapiro, the Governor of Pennsylvania, and Mark Kelly, the Senator from Arizona, who were prominent in the initial deliberations.

In recent days, the profile of the Minnesota governor has significantly increased, particularly following a widely circulated interview where he criticized certain Republicans as “peculiar”, a stance that was later embraced by national Democrats.

Many viewed Walz as a more secure option for Kamala Harris due to his strong liberal credentials and the controversies surrounding some of the other candidates from certain sections of the political spectrum.

Shapiro faced intense scrutiny recently for his handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations that arose after the Israel-Hamas conflict, resulting in criticism directed towards both him and Kelly from labor union leaders.

Furthermore, Walz’s appeal is enhanced by his origin in a Midwestern state that President Trump has been increasingly targeting for a potential electoral shift.

Despite Biden’s victory in Minnesota by a margin of seven points in 2020, and no Republican having won the state in the presidential race for over half a century, Trump and his running mate JD Vance have intensified their campaigning efforts in the region.
